Odisha finished third in the men`s team event of the 13th East Zone Carrom Championship, which was held at Kanchanjanga Stadium in Siliguri (WB) from June 20 to 22. The six-member Odisha team, comprising Chintamani Das, Sanjaya Das, V Akash, S R Samantaray, Asish Mohanty and P K Brahma, beat Bengal and Bihar by 2-1 identical margin but lost to Chhattisgarh 1-2.
In the women`s team event, Odisha, represented by Satadru Satpathy and Jyotsna Mohanty, crashed out early, losing to Jharkhand 1-2 and Bihar 0-3.
Akash was the most successful Odisha player in the individual event, finishing third in men`s category. He beat Mohammad Adil (UP) 2-0, Lakhan Sani (Chhattisgarh) 2-0, Asish Mohanty (Odisha) 2-0 and C Choudhury (Bengal) to reach the semifinals, where Mohammad Arif (UP) defeated him 2-1. In the match for the third position, Akash got the better of Rehan (UP) 2-0.
